Financing Options

Today the renewable energy industry has grown exponentially and with it, the ways of being able to finance its projects.  

Most renewable energy projects are being financed using the traditional ways of financing such as long-term debts or bank loans, home improvement loans and mortgage refinancing.  With Puerto Rico’s recently approved tax credits law and the net metering law financing a renewable energy project today, makes a lot of sense.

Another way of financing a renewable energy project is thru a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).  A PPA is a legal contract between an energy provider and a client.  Under a PPA contract the energy provider usually takes all the risks and responsibilities as the owner of the energy generating system.  The client will have the benefit of purchasing energy at a fixed rate over the length of the contract which could be between 5 and 25 years.  After the length of the contract the client will have the options of purchasing the system, may renew the PPA contract under different terms or can request that the system be removed.  Historically, a PPA contracts were signed between the energy provider and a commercial, industrial or government client.  Today, residential clients can also benefit from PPA contracts.

Every individual’s goals should be to reduce their energy expense, first by conserving energy and being efficient and second by making sure that the payments for the financing option that they choose are equal or less of what they now pay for energy, thus creating a positive or neutral cash flow.

The payments for a renewable energy system will eventually come to an end and you will enjoy the benefit of free energy for many years to come.  Not to say the same for your monthly electric utility bill; after ten, fifteen, twenty years of an electric utility bill what will you get?: another electric utility bill.
